Sarah aged 27, was diagnosed with an incurable cancer called Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) and was told to expect the worse.

“When I heard I might have chemotherapy, I was scared about the risk of developing a secondary cancer and the fact that chemotherapy wasn’t a cure for my cancer” said Sarah.

She was introduced to Associate Professor Con Tam and his team at St Vincent’s Hospital who were pioneering two new targeted drugs that are highly effective in Sarah’s type of leukaemia.

“Things were looking so dark and gloomy before I met A/ Professor Constantine Tam. He had an innovative solution that would treat my cancer. I remember Con saying to me that my swollen glands would be gone by my wedding this Christmas – a miracle.”

Sarah’s glands started to shrink within a week of being on the trial and her bone marrow biopsy showed that the cancer – which previously occupied most of her marrow, was reduced to less than 1%. This was a tremendous result.
