How a Nursing Scholarship opened doors for Wendy
Wendy McDonald has devoted nearly three decades to caring for patients experiencing complex pain.
Thanks to donor support, she now has the opportunity to pursue specialist training while continuing to care for her patients, support her team and be there for her family.
Your generosity will mean more nurses like Wendy can feel truly supported while fulfiling their passion.
The scholarship gave me the freedom to keep learning, so I can still provide for my family as well as give my patients the very best care possible.
– Wendy McDonald. Acute Pain Nurse Consultant at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne
My name is Wendy McDonald and I am an Acute Pain Nurse Consultant at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne.
For nearly three decades, I have cared for patients experiencing acute and complex pain. During that time, I have seen healthcare become increasingly complex and the need for specialist nursing expertise grow significantly.
A St Vincent's Nursing Scholarship gave me the opportunity to pursue further specialist training while balancing my clinical responsibilities and family commitments.
As a working mum raising a teenage son, further study often felt out of reach. Thanks to donor support, I am able to continue developing the skills that help me provide the industry-leading pain management care to my patients.
Today, I am using the knowledge gained through my scholarship to make a meaningful difference for patients experiencing complex pain.
As the primary income earner for my family, it gave me the opportunity to pursue further education that may otherwise have been out of reach.
I am now exploring opportunities to deepen my understanding of psychology, mental health and leadership as a patient's experience of pain is often intertwined with anxiety, depression and other complex challenges.
Caring for the whole patient
Alongside my colleague Kim Choate, I helped establish Victoria's only nurse-led Acute Pain Service Perioperative Pain Clinic.
The clinic supports patients living with chronic and complex pain before, during and after surgery. Many of these patients arrive feeling anxious, uncertain and concerned about how their pain will be managed.
The specialist knowledge I have gained through ongoing education allows me to better support these patients, advocate for their needs and work alongside multidisciplinary teams to deliver more holistic care.
As healthcare continues to evolve, continuing education helps ensure nurses like me remain equipped to meet increasingly complex patient needs.
Pain today is more complex than it was 20 years ago. Our care has to be holistic. We try to support patients in every way we can.
One nurse. Endless impact
The impact of a nursing scholarship extends far beyond a single recipient. It strengthens patient care, supports clinical excellence and helps nurses build the skills and confidence to lead in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.
Your gift today can help another nurse follow their passion, advance their skills and make a difference to countless patients in the years ahead.
