St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne oncology nurse Jessica Brain is once again championing Dry July, marking her fifth year participating in the alcohol-free fundraiser to support cancer patients.
Working on the Oncology and Haematology ward, Jess witnesses first-hand the impact of alcohol-related illness and the needs of patients undergoing intensive treatment – many of whom arrive from rural areas without basic personal items.
“I think of patients who are flown in urgently with life-threatening illnesses and have no time to pack a toothbrush,” she said. “Dry July helps us provide comfort items to make their hospital stay feel a little more like home.”
Jessica says the benefits of a month off alcohol go beyond the physical. “You get better sleep, more energy, and a clearer mind. It’s also a great opportunity to develop new routines and healthier coping mechanisms,” she said.
To reach her $2,000 fundraising goal this year, Jessica is once again hosting her popular bake sale on Friday July 25 from 12pm in the public hospital foyer. “We can raise thousands in just an hour,” she said. “It’s a great way to bring people together and support a good cause.”
Importantly, Jess isn’t doing it alone. Several of her colleagues from the ward are also taking part in Dry July, helping to raise funds and boost awareness across the hospital. “It’s really meaningful doing this as a team,” Jess said. “We all care so deeply about our patients, and it’s special knowing we’re contributing to something that directly improves their experience.”
Having raised over $5,000 across the last four years, Jess said the best part is seeing patients benefit directly from donations. “It’s so special to give them a sense of comfort during an incredibly difficult time.”
Her message to donors? “A heartfelt thank you. You’re making a real difference, and it becomes part of the legacy of patients and their families who support us.”
