Your support is helping prostate cancer patients

Thanks to your kind support, St Vincent’s prostate cancer nursing team was able to run the very first Prostate Cancer Support event for public and private patients.

St Vincent’s nurses are renowned for their commitment to their patients. This dedication has once again been demonstrated with the creation of this unique event, which is the only support group run by prostate cancer nurses in Victoria.

The vibe in the room was extremely positive as 15 prostate cancer patients gathered to share stories and support each other as they go through treatment for the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia.

Gail Tzounos, St Vincent’s Prostate Cancer Nurse and Event Facilitator was thrilled with how quickly everyone bonded. “All of the men only met each other for the first time at the event, but their common bond meant they quickly felt comfortable to engage with each other.”

The relatively informal gathering began with introductions. Gail was pleasantly surprised at how many of the men were almost instantly happy to share details about their very personal cancer stories with the group.

“It was clear that everyone felt slightly less overwhelmed after hearing from other men going through the same thing as they are,” Gail said.

The introductions were followed with a break to enjoy some delicious goodies and even more of a chance to mingle. Gail then conducted an open conversation about erectile function post-treatment. The topic had been pre-selected by the group and again it generated a lively discussion.

Gail said the men were still talking amongst themselves and breaking off into groups at the end of the event. “I walked away with a smile on my face because you could really see the benefit of bringing the men together. What I found particularly moving was the men’s honesty and willingness to show their vulnerability.

“It’s important for men to know they’re not facing prostate cancer alone. A close mateship group is good. This first event was an excellent start to forming these important connections,” Gail said.

The benefits to patients were very clear, even from the first event. Thank you, your generous support to our Prostate Cancer Appeal made these events a reality!

“One of the patients sent me an email the next day to say how much he enjoyed it and how much he was looking forward to the next one. On behalf of my team, I want to thank everyone who donated to this special cause, you really have made a difference,” Gail said.

The team plans to hold the events monthly in 2024. They are also keen to look at potentially setting up a program to support patient’s partners.
