Patients in the rapidly growing western corridor of Melbourne now have access to world-class orthopaedic surgery, thanks to our incredible supporters.
In late February, the Cilmi, Lamaro, and Arrigo families visited St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee to see the groundbreaking MAKO robotic surgical system they helped make possible. This state-of-the-art technology is transforming joint replacement surgery, enhancing precision, and improving patient outcomes.
“We expect approximately 15% increase in orthopaedic surgery at Werribee over the next three years, and the MAKO robot is essential for the Hospital to give patients the best possible care,” said General Manager of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee, Emma Saliba.
“The generosity of the families who helped fund the MAKO robot shows their deep dedication and commitment to improving the health of local people in the Werribee area, and for that, we are truly grateful,” she continued.
A revolution in joint replacement surgery
The visit provided a unique opportunity to witness the MAKO robot in action. Using a 3D CT scan, the MAKO robot creates a virtual model of the patient’s joint, allowing surgeons like Associate Professor Siva Chandrasekaran to develop a highly personalised surgical plan. The robotic arm then assists in executing the procedure with pinpoint accuracy.
“The robotic arm helps guide surgeons like me within the surgical plan and is more accurate than traditional approaches. While I’m in full control, the robotic arm won’t let me stray outside the defined area. This drastically limits any damage to surrounding tissue, resulting in faster recovery times, better implant alignment, and less post-surgery pain,” said A/Prof Chandrasekaran.
To date, 184 patients have already benefited from the MAKO robotic surgical system at Werribee, experiencing smoother recoveries and better surgical outcomes.
“The surgical team is so grateful to the three families who helped us purchase the MAKO robot. Without your help, we simply wouldn’t have the robot,” said A/Prof Chandrasekaran.
A gift that transforms lives
One of the donors, Alex Cilmi said creating access to modern surgical techniques in the west was of great importance to him.
“Our family has spent most of our lives in the West, and raising five kids, we know how important it is to have access to the best healthcare,” Mr Cilmi said.
“It made my family and me incredibly proud to assist St Vincent’s in purchasing the MAKO robot, knowing it will help people in our community," he said.
Thanks to the generosity of the Cilmi, Lamaro, and Arrigo families, the future of orthopaedic surgery and better patient care in Werribee has never looked brighter.
