In the waiting room of St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne’s pharmacy, a contemplative artwork accompanies people while they wait. Located on the ground floor of the Daly wing in Fitzroy, Enfoldment #1 is a large-scale work by Irish-Australian artist Kevin Todd.
Kevin has worked on different projects and exhibitions in many countries including, Morocco, Turkey, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and India. His works speak to the rich cultural diversity of SVHM and particularly, the varying faith traditions reflected in patients, family and staff of the hospital.
Enfoldment #1 is from one of three series generously donated by the artist to the St Vincent’s art collection. Each of the series is concerned with generative art, artwork made from an underlying mathematics or geometry.
The artist’s works show us that we can gain a deeper understanding of various cultures through art. In the Tetouan series, he explores the transcendent quality of Islamic art. The works in the Enfoldment series speak to Buddhist traditions in art.
Kevin speaks about the ideas behind these Buddhist inspired pieces. “The works … have been influenced by a consideration of the relationship between space, energy and consciousness and suggest a dynamic that’s often alluded to in religious art involving geometry or pattern. The three dimensional spatial sense evoked by the two dimensional forms suggests transcendence, while the materiality of the object creates a sense of immanence, the tension between each creating a sense of energy or presence in the artworks.”
Carefully selected artworks in the waiting room spaces of St Vincents’s Hospital Melbourne can offer opportunities to reflect on and process health journeys. A broad range of art works that reflect our diverse backgrounds and beliefs can be a meaningful point of connection.
