I was recently supporting a junior nurse caring for a patient following surgery.
The recovery initially appeared routine, but after receiving pain relief, I noticed a sudden change in their level of consciousness and responsiveness.
To someone without specialist training, this could have seemed like a normal reaction to medication. However, through my postgraduate studies, I have learned how quickly patients can deteriorate and how critical early recognition and response can be.
That training gave me the confidence to act immediately – supporting the patient's breathing, escalating my concerns to the medical team, and guiding the junior nurse through the steps to take.
Together, we were able to stabilise the patient and support their safe recovery.
