Love conquers all

When you reach your retirement years, couples generally set goals to travel and spend valuable time with their grandchildren. That is exactly what Laverton residents Alan and Judy were looking forward to doing together, along with planning for their 50-year wedding anniversary in January 2022.

Alan and Judy now have to fast-track their plans because Alan has terminal cancer. “And although they can’t give us an accurate time frame, it’s unlikely to be more than two to three years. Hopefully we can prove them wrong,” Alan said.

Alan was first diagnosed with rectal cancer in July 2020. This cancer is treatable, but the doctors quickly discovered he had secondary cancer that had spread to his lungs and liver, which is incurable.

Alan commenced treatment at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee approximately three weeks after receiving his diagnosis. He instantly fell in love with his new hospital.

“Everyone from the administration staff to Steve at the pharmacy and all the angel nurses, they are all so wonderful. All St Vincent’s staff really care and go out of their way to help. They make you feel a part of the family,” Alan said.

Alan and Judy are also grateful for the support they receive from their family and friends. They have three children and eight grandchildren.

“Our kids all put on a brave face but I don’t get treated with kid gloves. And that’s just the way I like it. I want life to be as normal as possible,” Alan said.

As they approach their 50-year wedding anniversary, Alan and Judy are proof that love conquers all.

“Cancer is living with us, we don’t live with cancer. We are just concentrating on spending precious time together and focusing on enjoying life,” Judy said.
